About the Fire Department

The Skull Camp Volunteer Fire Department Provides A Wide Range Of Services To The Citizens Located Within Its Districts As Well As The Surrounding Districts.  Services Provided Include:  Fire Suppression, Medical Response & Light Rescue.

 

In Fire Suppression The Department Has 35 Interior Attack Firefighters.    The Fire Department Has 6 Pieces Of Suppression Apparatus (2 Engines, 2 Tankers And 2 Brush Trucks).  Also 7 Of Our Firefighters Are State Certified Level II Firefighters. 

Equipment Carried On Our Engines Include:  Hose, Ladders, Appliances, Forcible Entry Tools, Ventilation Tools, 8 Air Packs, Thermal  Imaging Cameras, Gas Detectors And Other Tools.  Also Our Department Is Currently A Wildland Fire Suppression Department.  We Are Currently Able To Provide 2 Brush Trucks And Equipment To Equip15 Personnel For Wildland Hand Crews.  During The Spring And Fall We Primarily Respond To Wildland Fires.

 

In Medical Response  Skull Camp Fire Department In 2000 Only Had 7 First Responders, Now The Department Has 17 First Responders Which Range From:  3 EMT-Intermediates, 2-NREMT-Basics, 7-EMT-Basics, 4-Medical Responders And 1-County First Responder.  Each First Responder Is Supplied A Medical Bag With BLS Equipment.  Also The Department Has A New 2003 F-350 Truck That Is Used To Respond To Our Medical Calls.  This Truck Is Set Up To Handle All Medical Calls That We Respond To.  It Also Has An AED That Is Capable Of Being Used On Children As Well As Adults.  Each Year Our Medical Calls Increase And Members Are Wanting To Become More Involved In The First Response Program.  The First Response Program In The Past 2 Years Has Been Able To Save Over 5 Lives In Our Fire District. 

 

Light Rescue Response  Skull Camp Fire Department Currently Has The Capability Of Doing Light Rescue Techniques.  We Work Hand In Hand With The County Rescue Squads.  Due To The Distance Of Travel From The Rescue Squads To Locations In Our Fire District We Purchased Rescue Equipment To Be Able To Assist Them As Well As The Citizens In Our Fire District.  The Department Uses Its First Response Truck For Rescue Situations As Well As Medical Responses.  The Right Side Of The Truck Is Set Up For Rescue.  We Have An Hydraulic Pump That Is Used To Run Our Jaws-of-Life, Cutters And Rams.  We Also Have Several Hand Tools Stored On The Truck As Well.   The Department Has A Stokes Basket That Is Used To Transport Patients During Rugged Terrains.  Also The Department Has Rope Rescue Equipment Carried On The Truck That Can Be Used For The Stokes Basket And Vehicle Stabilization.  Skull Camp Also Has 4 Members That Are Emergency Rescue Technicians. 


Mission Statement

    The Skull Camp Fire Department is a volunteer fire department with over 40 members within the membership.  Each member whether on the board of directors or within the department is sworn to uphold the provision of Skull Camp Fire Department within the county of Surry.  To the citizens we protect, we pledge 24 hours a day protection from the devastation of fire and life threatening emergencies.  Beyond the immediate crisis, the Skull Camp Fire Department will continue to promote fire safety education to our citizens, from adolescent to adult.  We will also continue our aggressive approach towards the legislation to new technologies which promotes residential safety and reduces the risk to all families in the Skull Camp Fire district.
